According to the 2019 GlobalData research Construction in Australia – Key Trends and Opportunities by State and Territory to 2023, the decline was the result of a lull in major energy projects and the rapid expansion in residential development in the years running up to 2017. The subsequent oversupply of residential properties negatively impacted the growth and opportunity in the residential construction sector from 2017 to 2019.
The good news is the same research predicted steady improvements in the industry from 2019 to 2023. Construction roles predicted to have strong growth in 2020 and beyond
According to Job Outlook Australia construction now features in the top four industries for projected growth until 2023. But not all roles are created equal, and while some jobs are expected to boom, others are set to decline. Building and Plumbing Labourers
The amount of building and plumbing labouring job opportunities is expected to grow strongly, reaching 71,600 by 2023.

- Builders labourers
- Drainage, sewers and stormwater labourers
- Earthmoving labourers
- Plumbers assistants
Carpenters & Joiners
An expected 13,800 job opportunities are expected to become available every year up until 2023.
Civil Engineer Professionals
A total of 60,500 people are predicted to be working in civil engineering and related positions by 2023.

- Geotechnical engineers
- Quantity surveyors
- Structural engineers
Construction Managers
Construction managers consistently rate amongst the top in-demand jobs in construction, as well as offering a higher than average weekly salary thanks to the high skill level. There are expected to be around 10,800 openings a year.
Roles include:
- Construction project managers
- Project builders
To be eligible for a construction management role you may need licensing and qualifications. If you’re already in the industry with significant experience you may be eligible to receive recognised prior learning with a Diploma of Building and Construction (Management).
Plumbers
Plumbing is a major area of employment within construction, with around 108,000 people expected to be working in the trade by 2023.

- Airconditioning and mechanical services plumbers

- Roof Plumbers
Structural Steel Construction Workers
The number of people working as structural steel construction workers and related vocations is expected to reach 31,400 by 2023, with an anticipated 6,200 job openings every year.
Roles include:
- Construction riggers
- Scaffolders
- Steel fixers
- Structural steel erectors
