      FAQ

Yes — elective units in MEM31922 specifically include structural steel erection and “mark off/out structural fabrications and shapes”. So, if your training plan includes those electives, you are qualified in structural fabrication.

Typically, as an apprenticeship, it takes around 4 years, though many complete earlier. RPL may reduce that depending on your experience.

There are usually no formal academic prerequisites. However, you should have sound literacy, numeracy, good physical fitness, meet WHS standards, and be employed as an apprentice or eligible for RPL.

You can become a metal fabrication tradesperson, sheet metal worker, welder, boilermaker, patternmaker, or engage in structural fabrication. With additional experience, supervisory or specialist roles are possible.
